Camps Program

Somers Primary School believes that camps are a valuable experience for all children. In our Camps program, children participate in a wide variety of activities which develop a wide range of social and physical skills.

Grade 3 and 4 Camps

Children from Grades 3 and 4 have an annual camp which is a camp based on "adventure" activities at a local venue, such as "The Briars" in Mt Martha and Somers School Camp. This camp is usually held over 3 days and has proven to be an excellent introduction to camps for the younger children. Activities conducted include rock climbing, ropes courses, archery, giant swing, orienteering, team games and cooperative activities.

Grade 5 and 6 Camps

The Grade 5 and 6 classes have an annual camp, usually held over 4 or 5 days. In 2013, the camp was based in Melbourne city at the Urban Camp at Royal Park. Activities included visits to the MCG, Eureka Tower, a day-long program at the the Melbourne Zoo, and visits to Old Melbourne Gaol and the Victoria Market. There was also the experience of catching trains and trams and walking around the city. It proved to be a tremendous social and educational experience for every child who attended.

This year the Grade 5 and 6 children will visit our Nation's capital, Canberra, for their camp. Further details will follow.

In 2015 we are planning to have an adventure-based camp, possibly at a venue such as Wilson's Prom. All camps at this level emphasise the development of independence, cooperation and teamwork by every child who attends.

Excursions

Year 3/4 Excursion to The Briars for Environment Week

We have arranged for the Year 3 and 4 children to take part in the Environment Week activities on Monday 24th March. This exciting program will be held at “The Briars” in Mt Martha, and will run for the whole day. The program involves a wide variety of activities which explore many aspects of the environment. The children always find them interesting and they support our school’s focus on sustainability and caring for the environment.

The children will participate in two programs throughout the day. The morning program will involve hands on activities related to the environment. At lunchtime there will be entertainment provided. In the afternoon the children will participate in the Green Living Program which includes an environmental treasure hunt, a recycling workshop and interactive solar, wind, water and human power energy displays.
