Somers Primary provides a comprehensive Literacy Support Program. Students are given opportunities to participate in small groups for literacy extension or literacy
development activities. Individual literacy programs are also provided.
Literacy Support Program goals include:
- Providing a Literacy Support Program that enhances student literacy success.
- Encouraging the development of literacy skills that assist student learning in all other areas of education.
- Providing a learning environment where students can confidently celebrate their knowledge and love of literacy.
- Providing opportunities for staff to plan and deliver a literacy program that addresses the learning styles of all students through professional development and collegial interaction.
- Drawing upon parent and community expertise to enhance the learning environment and participate in the delivery of the Literacy Support Program within our school.
Literacy Extension
In addition to classroom activities, literacy extension occurs through participation in:
- Drama groups.
- Book circles.
- Premiers' Reading Challenge.
- Debating and Socratic Seminars.
Participation in reading circles enriches the students' knowledge of literacy through classic literature exploration and development of mature reading skills.
Being involved in drama groups encourages students to celebrate their literacy achievements and develop confidence in their oral language skills.
Literacy Development
Literacy development is given to students individually and in small groups through a variety of programs. These include:
- The Reading Intervention Program.
- The Language Support Program.
- Speech Pathology Referrals.
The Reading Intervention Program delivers individual programs to students on a daily basis.
The Language Support Program provides literacy development to individuals or small groups.
